Census 2020: Why it matters; Reason #3: Demographic data helps with retail recruitment

Victoria Counts! Census 2020

Do you want to see more shopping or restaurant options in Victoria? You can help by responding to the 2020 Census.

We’re all familiar with the excitement caused by the arrival of a favorite national retail chain in our city as well as the heartbreak when a community fixture like Sears closes its doors, followed by the anticipation of what type of new business might come to take its place. Have you ever wondered how businesses decide where to plant their flags when they’re looking to expand?

When large national retailers are trying to choose between hundreds or thousands of potential locations, they frequently use demographic data to whittle down their options. Some of the information they take into account, such as population size, is provided by the 2020 Census. Retailers prefer to set up shop in large and growing cities, and you can help to show them how much Victoria has grown by responding to the 2020 Census and making sure that everyone in your household is counted.

“A community has to reach certain population milestones in order to be considered by larger retailers and restaurants,” said Assistant City Manager Mike Etienne. “Chili’s, for example, will only locate in a retail trade area with a population of at least 50,000. By responding to the 2020 Census, residents can play a key role in helping Victoria attract new retailers and developments.”

The City has been working to grow retail for the past several years by partnering with The Retail Coach, a consulting firm that uses detailed demographic data to attract new businesses to Victoria. The Retail Coach takes into account a wide range of information, from median income to shopping habits, in determining which businesses would be a good fit for our community. Some of the population-related statistics it uses will be provided by the 2020 Census, and an accurate count could make or break a business’s decision to locate here.

The Census Bureau began mailing postcards March 12 inviting households to participate in the 2020 Census. Be sure to respond so that businesses know you’re here, and we could see exciting new retail options in the not-too-distant future.
