Summer is a time for relaxation, and this year we’ve definitely earned it. The kids have logged out of their virtual classes, and with some pandemic restrictions being lifted, it’s likely that you’re looking for a cure for your lingering cabin fever. Here are a few ideas for ways you can make the most of your summer here in Victoria.
Get some fresh air
As businesses closed their doors this spring, many people rediscovered Victoria’s parks and walking trails as a welcome alternative to staying at home. If you’ve only scratched the surface of what Victoria’s parks have to offer, go to victoriatx.gov and check out our list to build your summer itinerary. And now that the playgrounds are open, the time is perfect to take the kids out to play.
If your visit to Riverside Park made you want to get closer to the river, consider a relaxing kayak ride down the beautiful Guadalupe. Flow Paddle Co is now open for business at 476 McCright Drive, offering rentals of kayaks, inner tubes and bikes.
There’s still time to sign up for Parks and Recreation’s summer leagues for adult kickball and softball or high school softball and baseball (late registration fees apply for high school softball). We hope to see you and your kids out at the ball park.
Get involved
If you find yourself with a little extra time on your hands, giving some of that time back to your community can be incredibly rewarding. Just ask the City staff and volunteer board members behind Keep Victoria Beautiful. The organization is hoping to start hosting volunteer litter pickups as early as July. Details will be posted at victoriatx.gov.
In the meantime, you can live out the spirit of Keep Victoria Beautiful by organizing a pickup in your own community. Simply remember to wear gloves and exercise caution near roadways.
Nonprofits around town will be looking to recruit volunteers this summer, and many will be happy to let you bring the kids along as well. Pick an organization and be sure to call ahead to learn what their policies are.
Attend a local event
As summer begins, it’s a good idea to mark your calendar with a few events to look forward to. Parks and Recreation will host a drive-in Fourth of July celebration at the Victoria Community Center; come park your car and watch the fireworks. Later, be sure to come out to Riverside Park on Aug. 22 for our kayak clinic (if kayaking with Flow Paddle Co has whetted your appetite).
Of course, as COVID-19 remains a concern, some organizers have canceled their events, but others are working creatively to keep the fun going. Did you know that the Victoria Bach Festival is being offered entirely online this year? Be sure to check the Explore Victoria Texas Facebook page for updates about events, virtual and otherwise.
