[ARCHIVED] City plans informational session as Council sets mayoral special election

City of Victoria Municipal Court

The City Council at its Nov. 21 meeting scheduled a special election for Feb. 3 to fill the role of mayor, and the City is inviting prospective candidates to an informational session to learn about the position.

The special election is being called because Mayor Jeff Bauknight recently announced that he intends to run for the Texas House of Representatives, representing District 30.

Under the Texas Constitution, Bauknight’s announcement of his candidacy for state office “shall constitute an automatic resignation” from the office of mayor. Bauknight will remain in his role until a new mayor is elected.

Under state law, a new mayor must be elected within 120 days of Bauknight’s resignation, but the election may not be held within 30 days before or after a general election for state and county officers, general primary election or runoff primary election. Victoria’s next general election is scheduled for May 4, and the primary election will take place March 5.

Information for candidates

The City of Victoria will host an informational session 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Nov. 28 at the City Council chambers, 107 W. Juan Linn St., to give interested applicants an opportunity to learn more about the duties of mayor.

Attendance is encouraged but not required. Lunch will be provided.

How to apply

Applications for candidacy are available at the City Secretary’s Office in City Hall, 105 W. Juan Linn St., or online at www.victoriatx.gov/city-secretary.

The deadline to file for a place on the ballot is Dec. 4.

The candidate who is elected will fill an unexpired term that ends in May 2025.
