[ARCHIVED] Civilian Police Academy offers hands-on experience of police work

The Victoria Police Department is now accepting applications for Civilian Police Academy #44. 

What is it?

The Civilian Police Academy is an 11-week program designed to give participants a behind-the-scenes look at the Victoria Police Department and experience police training firsthand. Sessions are held 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays, Feb. 20-April 30, with one Saturday morning session April 27 at a time to be determined.

How much does it cost?

The program is free thanks to the financial support of local businesses.

What to expect

Law enforcement officials will teach attendees how their police department works through a combination of classroom lessons and hands-on simulations and experiences. Topics will include:

  • Building searches
  • Firearm safety
  • Crime scene searches
  • Traffic stops
  • K-9 tactics
  • SWAT
  • And more

How to apply

Each class is limited to 20 students and is filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Applicants must be 18 years of age and must pass a background check. 

Applications can be picked up at the Community Engagement Office located in the Victoria Mall between Chick-Fil-A and Murdoch’s, or downloaded at www.victoriatx.gov/police

The deadline to apply is Jan. 31.
