If you are driving at night, you may have noticed that Victoria is looking a lot brighter than it has in the past.

The City of Victoria has completed Phase 2 of its citywide LED lighting project in partnership with AEP Texas. This project upgraded all 4,050 AEP street lights in Victoria, replacing old amber-colored high-pressure sodium (HPS) lights with bright, white LED lights.

Phase 1 of the project began in July 2022 and wrapped up in November 2022. The phase focused on the area south of Airline Road.

Phase 2 of the project focused on the area north of Airline Road.

The benefits of LED lighting include:

  • Increased safety for drivers and walkers
  • Energy cost savings that bring a return on investment
  • Greater community appeal for businesses, visitors, and residents

What’s next

Next, Phase 3 will focus on upgrading approximately 290 Victoria Electric Co-op (VEC) streetlights on the north side of Victoria that are not serviced by AEP. The City is also conducting a photometric study to identify low-lit areas.

Futures phases include:

  • Phase 4: Improve lighting by trimming trees and extending pole arms where needed; develop plan for low-lit areas
  • Phase 5: Install additional lighting where needed
