[ARCHIVED] Residents invited to downtown festivities on Victoria’s bicentennial date

PHOTO #3: The newly expanded De Leon Plaza includes a permanent performance pavilion, a public restroom, a decorative water feature and additional seating. 

The City of Victoria will turn 200 years old on April 13, and residents are invited to celebrate this milestone in the place where the City’s story began: historic downtown Victoria.

De Leon Plaza performance pavilionThe daylong celebration will begin at 8 a.m. with the Victoria Day of Caring, a citywide service project in partnership with local nonprofits. Then, starting at 10 a.m., residents are invited to the Home of the Six Flags Market in downtown Victoria, hosted by Mother Cluckers Downtown.

The market will feature vendors; food trucks; inflatables; and live performances by Love Me Last, John Paul Ortiz & Rose Marie, and Solid Jazz.

At 1 p.m., the City will host a public dedication ceremony for the new statue of Victoria’s founders, Martín de León and Patricia de la Garza, at De Leon Plaza, followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly expanded plaza.

A small brick building with seating and a decorative fountain in the frontThe ceremonies will feature performances by Mariachi Tapatio and Victoria ISD’s ballet folklorico, as well as a special recognition of the descendants of the De León family.

The day will conclude with the Bicentennial Ball, an evening of dining and dancing featuring performances by the Nash Hernandez Orchestra, Mariachi Nuevo Victoria and Victoria ISD students.
