[ARCHIVED] Victoria Fire Department encourages summer safety awareness

George Gamez

While we all look forward to creating cherished memories of summer activities such as vacations, swimming and quality time with loved ones, it's critical to be aware of the potential safety issues that summer can bring. The Victoria Fire Department offers all Victoria residents and visitors the following tips to ensure a safe summer.

Heat-related illnesses

High temperatures and humidity can lead to serious heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Signs of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, muscle cramps, weakness, headache and nausea. Heatstroke follows heat exhaustion, with signs including hot, dry skin; rapid pulse; dizziness; and confusion. The elderly, outdoor workers and those with medical conditions are at higher risk.

Whether indoors or outdoors, we must be aware of the potential dangers of extreme heat and take precautions.

  • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. Avoid alcohol, caffeine and sugary drinks, which can cause dehydration.
  • Dress appropriately outdoors with a hat, sunglasses and loose-fitting clothing that breathes, like cotton.
  • Schedule frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
  • If you see someone with heatstroke symptoms, call 911 immediately; if possible, move the person to a cooler environment.
  • Ensure home air conditioning and fans are in working condition.
  • Locate the nearest cooling centers in case you are without air conditioning, fans or power.

One of the scariest safety risks we face is children left unattended in vehicles. A car's interior can rise to over 100 degrees within minutes. Even cracking a window does little to prevent these high temperatures, which can prove fatal for a child. Never leave a child alone in a car, truck or other motor vehicle during warm weather.

Hurricane preparedness

Summer also brings hurricane season and the risk of powerful storms with devastating impacts.

  • Have a family emergency plan and review it together.
  • Stock an emergency supply kit with non-perishable foods, water, batteries, etc.
  • Secure your property by trimming trees/shrubbery and clearing clogged rain gutters.
  • When a hurricane watch is issued, closely monitor the situation and follow official guidance.
  • If advised to evacuate, do so immediately; do not try to ride out the storm.

Swimming safety

We must also be aware of potential hazards while enjoying pools, beaches and waterways.

  • Supervise children in the water at all times.
  • Swim only in designated areas.
  • Obey all instructions from lifeguards.
  • Never swim alone or in unsanctioned areas.
  • Don't consume alcohol when swimming.
  • Wear a life jacket when boating or participating in water sports.
  • If caught in a rip current, remain calm and swim parallel to shore until you escape the pull of the current. Once you are free, swim at an angle away from the current toward shore.

Grilling safety

Backyard barbecues, whether grilling hamburgers or hotdogs, are a great summer tradition. However, they can quickly become hazardous if proper precautions aren't taken. Each year, thousands of fires and injuries involving grills and barbecues occur across the country.

  • Always grill outdoors in a well-ventilated area.
  • Place the grill on a level surface at least 10 feet away from any building or combustible materials.
  • Have some type of fire suppression nearby, such as a fire extinguisher or water.
  • Never leave a lit grill unattended.

By taking some basic safety precautions, we can safely enjoy all the fun activities summer offers. Stay cool, stay prepared and stay safe out there! As always, if you have any fire safety questions or need assistance, do not hesitate to reach out to the Victoria Fire Department.
