[ARCHIVED] Warrant Resolution Month puts residents back in the driver’s seat

Vaness Heinhold

A driver’s license is something that many people take for granted—but for some residents, it means the difference between living in fear and being able to fully participate in our community.

If a person has unpaid Municipal Court fines due to a minor offense, a common consequence is for a hold to be placed on their driver’s license. This is intended to incentivize residents to take care of their fines, but for residents who are unable to pay their fines due to circumstances beyond their control, the effects of not having a driver’s license can quickly stack up. They might be unable to hold a job that requires reliable transportation. They might be unable to pick up their kids or take care of their parents. And if they choose to drive in spite of the hold (and eventually an arrest warrant is issued), they will have to live in fear of being pulled over and/or being arrested.

The City of Victoria Municipal Court is at the forefront of coming up with options for residents to take care of their fines. We believe that everyone can and should take care of their outstanding tickets, but different people may need to pay in different ways. If a person is unable to pay their fine in full, we have options like payment plans or community service. If a person is unable to attend a traditional court docket, we will find other ways to connect with them.

February is Warrant Resolution Month for the court, and we make a special effort to help citizens resolve their cases this month by hosting extra dockets where residents can meet with me to explore their options.

Virtual dockets

The court will host a virtual docket at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, to accommodate residents who need to access the court outside of working hours. We will also have our regularly scheduled virtual docket at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24.

To help the docket proceed efficiently, residents should check in early so that I can gather their case information. Residents can check in on Zoom up to 30 minutes before the session begins. Because our virtual dockets are so highly attended, residents are encouraged to check in promptly so that they can be seen in a timely manner.

Walk-in dockets

For residents who prefer to visit us in person, we will host our walk-in docket 9-11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 24, at the courtroom, 107 W. Juan Linn St. The in-person docket is a come-and-go event.

Outreach dockets

Outreach dockets are a collaborative effort by the court, our community partners and local attorneys to meet and connect with residents where they are. Our next outreach docket will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, at the Victoria Mall, 7800 N. Navarro St., in the community room (near the food court).

If you would like to partner with the court to host an outreach docket or other type of event, please fill out our community outreach form at www.victoriatx.gov/courtoutreach.

Even when it isn’t Warrant Resolution Month, taking care of a speeding ticket shouldn’t be a struggle. If you’ve fallen behind on your payments and you’re unsure how to get back on track, please contact the court at 361-485-3050 or courtclerk@victoriatx.gov.

Vanessa Heinold is the City of Victoria Municipal Court judge.
