Four young men in safety vest pose near bags of collected trashAs back-to-school time draws near, Keep Victoria Beautiful is inviting residents to represent their schools and other community groups at the fourth annual citywide Fall Sweep 8-10 a.m. Sept. 20.

This annual event, which is one of two citywide cleanups hosted by Keep Victoria Beautiful each year, routinely attracts a wide array of teams from local businesses, churches and schools, all eager to serve the community in a way that reflects well on their organizations.

One of the event’s largest supporters is the University of Houston-Victoria (soon to be Texas A&M University-Victoria), which sends volunteers from multiple athletic teams and student groups. Environmental Services Director Christy Youker, who is also the executive director of Keep Victoria Beautiful, expressed hope that the first A&M-Victoria students will show their spirit for their new school by continuing to give back.

Portrait of Christy Youker“We are excited to welcome back our longtime participants as well as new volunteers who want to be a part of this growing tradition,” Youker said. “Keep Victoria Beautiful cleanups are a great way to bring people together to show pride in their community, whether that’s the local community represented by a school or workplace or the Victoria community as a whole.”

To register for the event, visit www.victoriatx.gov/kvb. Volunteers will meet at the Target parking lot, 7608 Zac Lentz Parkway, and other locations that will be determined based on the number of registrations.

KVB will provide gloves, bags and safety vests. Volunteers should wear long pants and closed-toe shoes.

Coffee and light breakfast will be provided before the cleanup. Food will also be provided immediately following the cleanup.

Large group of people pose with bags of collected trashSponsors for the event are Amcor, Chick-fil-A, Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages, the Salvation Army and the Texas Department of Transportation. Additional Keep Victoria Beautiful sponsors are Armstrong Warehouse and Transfer, Enterprise Mobility, H-E-B, Ron Walker, Townsquare Media, the Victoria Television Group and Waste Management.

Following the cleanup, awards will be given for the most spirited team, the team that picks up the most trash and the team that finds the most unusual item. The winners will be recognized at KVB’s volunteer appreciation event in January.
