Smoke Detector Drive

The Victoria Fire Department will host a smoke detector drive during the month of October as part of Fire Prevention Month.

The National Fire Protection Association encourages communities to raise awareness of fire safety during Fire Prevention Month and Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 6-12). This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!”

Beginning Oct. 1, donation boxes will be placed at the Walmart on Navarro and the Walmart on Rio Grande Street, where residents can donate new smoke detectors. Members of the fire department will use the donated smoke detectors to safeguard homes throughout Victoria.

Working smoke alarms are essential to keep families safe from potential dangers, said Fire Chief George Gamez. We encourage community members to donate and help us toward our three-year goal of putting smoke alarms in 90% of Victoria homes.

A Smoke Detector Drive event will be held 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12 at Walmart on Rio Grande Street. Community members will have an opportunity to visit with VFD first responders and touch a truck.
