Purpose and Requirements of Permits

Purpose: Permits serve two primary purposes for the Victoria Fire Department. They identify specific activities, operations, practices, or functions for which additional information is essential to support effective firefighting operations. They also ensure that plans and specifications for fire protection systems, appliances, hazardous operations, and other relevant building features have been reviewed.

Issuance and Posting: Permit fees must be paid prior to issuance. Permits must be posted on the premises at all times and be readily available for inspection by the fire code official.

Transfers and Changes: Issued permits are non-transferable. Any change in occupancy, operation, tenancy, or ownership requires a new permit.

Code Compliance: A permit does not authorize violation, cancellation, or disregard of any provisions of the 2024 International Fire Code, as adopted, or any other applicable laws or regulations of the jurisdiction.

Expiration and Extensions: Permits expire 12 months from the date of issuance. An extension may be granted at no cost if requested in writing at least two weeks before the expiration date. Expired permits cannot be renewed; if a permit is not extended before expiration, a new permit is required, and the fee for the replacement permit is one-half the standard fee for a new permit.

Construction Permits

A construction permit authorizes the installation of equipment used in connection with those activities, as well as the installation or modification of any fire protection system, equipment, or other construction in accordance with the adopted 2024 International Fire Code. The permit automatically becomes invalid if work does not commence within 180 days of issuance.

For any construction permit requiring a final inspection, the applicable Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) forms for the systems under inspection must be completed and available at the time of the final inspection.

All fees must be paid in full before a reinspection can be scheduled.

Operational Permits

An operational permit authorizes the holder to maintain, store, or handle materials, or to conduct processes that create conditions hazardous to life or property. The permit remains in effect until it is reissued, renewed, or revoked, or for the period specified on the permit.
